Time Lapse (2014)

Time Lapse follows three friends—Finn, Callie, and Jasper—who discover a mysterious camera that takes photos 24 hours into the future. Initially using it for personal gain, they soon realize that the machine’s images seem to dictate their actions, trapping them in a dangerous cycle where they must fulfill what they see in the photos or face deadly consequences. As paranoia grows, their attempts to manipulate the future only ensure the events unfold exactly as predicted. The film explores concepts of determinism, causal loops, and the consequences of trying to control time.

Time Travel Concepts

Causal Loop

The photos taken by the camera dictate the characters’ actions, but those actions are only taken because they saw them in the first place, forming a closed loop.

Bootstrap Paradox

The knowledge of future events comes from the photos, but since the machine captures images of events that already happened, the origin of those actions remains ambiguous.

Predestination Paradox

Every attempt to change the future only ensures the predicted outcome happens exactly as shown in the photos, reinforcing the idea that the timeline is set.

Immutable Timeline

Despite their efforts to outmaneuver the predictions, the friends find that they are locked into a sequence of events that cannot be altered, no matter how hard they try.

Reverse Causality

Events are caused by knowledge of the future rather than the past, as the characters act based on images they have seen but have not yet lived through.
